Kia Carnival: If you have a flat tire (with spare tire) / Changing tires

Safety warning for changing tires on a Kia Carnival WARNING

A vehicle can slip or unexpectedly roll off a jack, which could result in serious injury or even death to you or anyone standing nearby. To ensure your safety while servicing your Kia Carnival, you must strictly follow these essential precautions:

  • Never place any part of your body underneath the vehicle when it is supported only by the jack.

  • NEVER attempt to change a tire within active traffic lanes. ALWAYS move your Kia Carnival completely off the road and onto firm, level ground, well away from traffic, before starting any repair work. If you cannot locate a safe, level surface, contact a professional towing service for assistance.

  • Always use the specific jack provided by the manufacturer for your Kia Carnival.

  • ALWAYS place the jack exclusively at the designated jacking points on the vehicle chassis. NEVER attempt to lift the Kia Carnival by placing the jack under the bumpers or any other non-structural part of the body.

  • Do not start the engine or allow it to run while the vehicle is elevated on the jack.

  • Ensure that all passengers have exited the vehicle and that no one remains inside while it is supported by the jack.

  • Keep children in a secure area, far from the road and the vehicle, at all times.

  1. Park your Kia Carnival on a flat, level surface and engage the parking brake firmly.

  2. Ensure the gear shifter is set to P (Park), confirm the parking brake is applied, and turn the engine completely OFF.

  3. Activate your hazard warning flashers to alert other drivers of your presence.

  4. Retrieve the wheel lug nut wrench, the vehicle jack, and the spare tire from their designated storage compartments.

  5. Place wheel blocks (or heavy stones/bricks) in front of and behind the tire that is diagonally opposite the jack position to prevent the Kia Carnival from rolling.

    • To prevent accidental movement, always set the parking brake fully and block the wheel diagonally opposite the one you are changing on your Kia Carnival.

    • It is strongly recommended that you block the wheels and ensure no person remains inside the Kia Carnival while it is being raised on a jack.

  6. Use the lug nut wrench to loosen each wheel lug nut one full turn in a counterclockwise direction. Do not fully remove any nuts until the vehicle has been raised off the ground.

  • Carefully position the jack at the designated front (1) or rear (2) jacking point that is closest to the flat tire you are changing on your Kia Carnival. It is strictly required to place the jack exclusively at these specific locations under the frame. You can easily identify the correct jacking positions by locating the reinforced plates welded directly to the vehicle's frame; these specific plates feature two locator tabs and a raised central dot designed to perfectly index and interlock with the jack head for maximum stability.

Proper alignment of the jack with the Kia Carnival frame plate

  • Insert the wheel lug nut wrench into the jack assembly and begin turning it steadily in a clockwise direction. Continue raising your Kia Carnival until the flat tire just clears the ground, which requires a minimum clearance of approximately 1.2 inches (30 mm). Stop lifting at this point. Before proceeding to completely remove the loosened wheel lug nuts, critically assess the situation: make absolutely sure the vehicle is perfectly stable on the jack and that there is zero risk of unexpected movement, rolling, or slippage.

  • Finish loosening the wheel lug nuts and carefully remove them completely using your fingers. Store the nuts in a clean, safe place. Gently slide the flat wheel off the mounting studs and immediately lay it flat on the ground to prevent it from rolling away into traffic. To install the replacement wheel onto the hub, lift the spare tire, align its mounting holes with the exposed wheel studs on your Kia Carnival, and smoothly slide the wheel into position.

If you find this step challenging due to the weight of the tire, try tipping the wheel slightly backward to align just the top hole with the uppermost stud first. Once the top stud is engaged, gently jiggle and rotate the wheel back and forth until it easily slides over the remaining studs and sits flush.

  • To securely reinstall the wheel, hold it firmly against the hub to keep it steady on the studs. Thread the wheel lug nuts back onto the studs and tighten them as much as possible by hand (finger-tight). Give the tire a firm push and jiggle it to ensure it is completely seated and perfectly flush against the hub assembly. After settling the wheel, tighten each nut once again with your fingers to take up any new slack.

  • Slowly and carefully lower your Kia Carnival back to the ground by turning the wheel lug nut wrench counterclockwise until the jack is fully retracted and can be safely removed.

Once the vehicle's weight is fully supported by the tires, position the wrench as indicated in the accompanying drawing to properly torque the wheel lug nuts. Ensure that the wrench socket is seated completely and squarely over each nut to prevent stripping the metal. Use your upper body strength securely, but do not stand or jump on the wrench handle, and never use an extension pipe to gain extra leverage, as this can over-torque and severely damage the studs. Tighten the nuts following a star or crisscross pattern (tightening every other nut) to ensure even pressure distribution. Go around the wheel completely until all nuts are firmly tight, and then perform a second pass to double-check each one. After successfully changing wheels, we strongly advise having the tire pressure and wheel torque formally checked by a certified technician at an authorized Kia dealer.

Safety warning regarding clean mounting surfaces for Kia Carnival wheels WARNING

    Installing a wheel

    • Prior to installing a new wheel on your Kia Carnival, you must always meticulously inspect and clean off any corrosion, rust, dirt, or foreign materials present on the mounting surfaces. This includes the back face of the wheel itself, the wheel hub, and the surface of the brake drum or brake disc that makes direct contact with the wheel. Ensure that any retaining screws or fasteners attaching the rotor to the hub are completely flush so they do not interfere with the wheel's mounting orientation. Installing a wheel without ensuring perfectly clean, flush metal-to-metal contact can inevitably cause the wheel lug nuts to loosen over time. This severe oversight could lead to the wheel detaching entirely while the vehicle is in motion, resulting in a catastrophic loss of vehicle control, severe personal injury, or even death.

    • Always verify the tire pressure of the newly installed spare tire as soon as possible, and ensure the lug nuts are torqued to the manufacturer's precise specifications to maintain the highest safety standards for your Kia Carnival.

  • When installing a wheel on your Kia Carnival, always verify that the wheel makes full, clean contact with the hub mounting surface. If the contact surface between the wheel and the hub is compromised by debris or misalignment, the wheel lug nuts may gradually loosen during operation. This poses a severe risk, as a loose nut could eventually lead to the loss of the entire wheel, resulting in a dangerous loss of vehicle control.

    Wheel nut tightening torque:

For both standard steel wheels and aluminum alloy wheels on your Kia Carnival, the required torque specification is:

    79 ~ 94 lbf·ft (11 ~ 13 kgf·m)

If you possess a tire pressure gauge, carefully remove the valve cap and measure the current air pressure. Should the pressure fall below the manufacturer’s recommended level, drive slowly and cautiously to the nearest service station to inflate the tire to the correct pressure. If the reading is too high, release air until the pressure reaches the specified level. Always ensure you securely reinstall the valve cap after checking or adjusting your Kia Carnival tire pressure. The valve cap acts as an essential seal against moisture and dirt; if the cap is missing, air may slowly leak from the tire. If you misplace a valve cap, purchase a replacement and install it as soon as possible to maintain tire integrity.

Once you have finished changing the wheels, always properly secure the flat tire in its designated storage area and ensure that the jack and associated tools are returned to their specific storage compartments to prevent them from becoming loose projectiles.

Caution: Importance of using correct metric lug nuts on Kia Carnival CAUTION: Reusing lug nuts

During the wheel removal process, make certain that you reinstall the original lug nuts that were removed. If you are replacing them, ensure that the new nuts feature the exact same metric thread pitch and chamfer configuration as the originals. Your Kia Carnival is engineered with specific metric threads on its wheel studs and nuts. Attempting to install a non-metric or mismatched thread nut onto a metric stud will fail to secure the wheel properly and will permanently damage the stud, necessitating a costly replacement of the entire wheel stud assembly.

Please note that many aftermarket lug nuts do not utilize these specific metric threads. Exercise extreme caution and verify the thread specifications before installing any aftermarket lug nuts or custom wheels on your Kia Carnival. If you have any doubt regarding compatibility, please consult an authorized Kia dealer.

Warning: Risks associated with damaged wheel studs on Kia Carnival WARNING: Wheel studs

If the wheel studs on your Kia Carnival appear damaged, stripped, or rusted, they may lose their structural ability to retain the wheel safely. Driving with compromised studs could lead to the loss of the wheel while the vehicle is in motion, potentially resulting in a collision and serious personal injury.

Warning: Never apply lubricant to wheel studs or nuts on Kia Carnival WARNING

Never apply oil, grease, or any other lubricant to the wheel studs or lug nuts. These substances can cause the nuts to loosen unexpectedly due to reduced friction, which could result in the wheel falling off your Kia Carnival and causing a serious crash.
