Forward/Side/Reverse Parking Distance Warning malfunction

Warning display for Kia Carnival Parking Distance Warning system malfunction

[A]: Check Driver Assistance system

If a technical error occurs within the Parking Distance Warning system or its associated hardware, a warning message will appear on the instrument cluster of your Kia Carnival. This system is critical for maintaining safe parking habits.

The specific details of the fault can be retrieved from the service message section within the utility information view on your Kia Carnival instrument cluster display. If the system continues to exhibit errors after verification, please have your vehicle inspected by an authorized Kia dealer to ensure the system is restored to full functionality.

Kia Carnival instrument cluster displaying Parking Distance Warning system limited alert

A: Driver Assistance system limited. Ultrasonic sensor blocked.

The ultrasonic sensors are essential for the Parking Distance Warning system to detect objects surrounding your Kia Carnival. You may experience temporary limitations or total system inactivity if sensors are obstructed by environmental debris, such as packed snow, heavy rain, mud, or other foreign substances. You can identify the specific sensor triggering the blind spot warning by checking the service messages within the utility information view on your Kia Carnival instrument cluster display window.

Typically, the Parking Distance Warning will resume normal operation as soon as you remove any contamination from the affected recognition sensors. We strongly advise you to keep these sensors clean and free of buildup. If the system continues to exhibit errors even after thorough cleaning, please visit an authorized Kia dealer to have your Kia Carnival professionally inspected.

  • The Master warning light (Kia Carnival Master warning light icon for driver assistance systems) will illuminate in the direction of the target sensor if a malfunction occurs or if a specific ultrasonic sensor becomes blocked while the Parking Distance Warning is active. You can verify the details in the service message section of the instrument cluster display window.

Limitations of Forward/Side/Reverse Parking Distance Warning

The Parking Distance Warning system in your Kia Carnival may not function as intended under the following circumstances:

  • Ice or frost has formed on the surface of the sensors.

  • Sensors are obstructed by foreign materials, such as heavy snow or standing water (the system will generally resume normal operation once these substances are removed).

  • Operating the Kia Carnival in extremely high or low temperatures that exceed the sensor's calibrated range.

  • The sensor or the sensor assembly has been physically disassembled or tampered with.

  • The sensor face has been subjected to high-force pressure or struck by a hard object, causing internal damage.

  • The surface of the sensor has been scratched or scored by a sharp object.

  • The sensors or surrounding bumper area have been directly blasted with a high-pressure washer.

  • When external high-frequency emitters, such as loud vehicle horns, running motorcycle engines, or large vehicle air-brake systems, are in close proximity.

Furthermore, the Parking Distance Warning may exhibit performance degradation when:

  • Driving through heavy downpours or dense water spray.

  • Water is streaming directly over the surface of the sensor, interfering with the ultrasonic wave reflection.

  • Signal interference is caused by the ultrasonic sensors of another vehicle nearby.

  • The sensors are covered with a layer of snow or ice.

  • Driving on highly uneven, gravel, or bush-covered terrain that triggers false reflections.

  • External equipment generating ultrasonic waves is located near the Kia Carnival sensors.

  • The license plate has been re-mounted to a location other than its original factory position.

  • The Kia Carnival bumper height has been modified or the factory-installed sensor angle has been altered.

  • Aftermarket equipment or accessories are attached near the ultrasonic sensors, interfering with their field of view.

The following object types may be difficult for the system to detect:

  • Sharp or slender objects, including ropes, metal chains, or small poles.

  • Narrow objects, such as the sharp corners of square columns.

  • Materials that naturally absorb ultrasonic frequencies, such as thick clothing, sponge-like foam, or fresh snow.

  • Objects smaller than 40 inches (100 cm) in length and narrower than 6 inches (14 cm) in diameter.

  • Pedestrians, animals, or objects positioned extremely close to the ultrasonic sensors, falling into the system's "blind zone."

  • Objects located in the side space between the front and rear side ultrasonic sensors, or those approaching that specific side space.

Safety warning label regarding Kia Carnival Parking Distance Warning system limitations WARNING

  • The Parking Distance Warning is designed purely as a supplemental safety function. Its operation can be influenced by various environmental and situational factors. It remains the driver's responsibility to always perform visual checks of the area in front of and behind your Kia Carnival before and during all parking maneuvers.

  • The new vehicle warranty does not extend to coverage for accidents or damage to your Kia Carnival resulting from a failure or malfunction of the Parking Distance Warning system.

  • Always exercise heightened awareness when driving near people, pedestrians, and especially children. Note that the ultrasonic sensors may fail to detect certain objects due to the object's specific material composition, size, or distance, all of which impact sensor sensitivity.

  • The Parking Distance Warning does not guarantee alerts in a specific order of detection; the system response varies dynamically based on your Kia Carnival speed and the geometry of the person, animal, or object being detected.

  • If you suspect that your Kia Carnival Parking Distance Warning is not operating correctly, schedule an inspection with an authorized Kia dealer to ensure continued safe operation.
