-
The Kia Carnival airbag system is active only when the ENGINE START/STOP button is in the ON position. For
safety, the system may remain active for approximately 3 minutes following an ignition-off event.
-
In the event of a severe frontal or side collision, the appropriate airbags in the Kia Carnival will inflate in
a mere fraction of a second to provide a protective barrier between occupants and the vehicle's interior
structures.
-
There is no specific threshold speed for airbag deployment. Instead, the Kia Carnival sensors evaluate the
severity and direction of a collision, alongside various crash dynamics, to determine if an electronic
deployment signal is necessary.
-
Airbags do not deploy in every accident. Deployment depends on critical factors such as the vehicle's speed at
impact, the angle of the collision, and the mass and structural characteristics of the object or vehicle
struck.
-
Frontal airbags are designed to inflate and deflate with extreme speed—so rapidly that you will likely not see
the inflation process occurring. In most cases, you will only encounter the deflated fabric of the airbags
hanging from their compartments once the event has concluded.
-
In addition to standard side-impact scenarios, the side and curtain airbags in the Kia Carnival are programmed
to deploy if the sensing system detects a potential rollover.
-
During a detected rollover, these airbags are designed to remain inflated for a longer duration, providing
sustained protection to prevent occupant ejection and reduce injury severity.
-
Because the Kia Carnival airbags must inflate with significant force to create a protective buffer before the
occupant makes contact with interior surfaces, the deployment process is inherently powerful. While this speed
is vital for life-saving protection, it can also cause minor injuries such as facial abrasions, bruising, or
broken bones due to the sheer force of expansion.
-
Occupants who are positioned too close to the steering wheel or the passenger-side dashboard face a higher risk
of fatal injury during airbag inflation. Maintaining proper seating distance is essential for all Kia Carnival
passengers.
To safely coexist with your Kia Carnival's advanced airbag system, always sit as far back from the steering wheel as
is comfortable while still maintaining full, safe control of the vehicle. It is strongly recommended to maintain a
distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) between your chest and the steering wheel. Failure to maintain this clearance
significantly increases the risk of serious or fatal injury should the driver's airbag be required to deploy.
Upon deployment, the airbags in your Kia Carnival will produce a loud noise accompanied by the release of smoke and
fine powder into the cabin. This is a standard and expected reaction resulting from the rapid ignition of the airbag
inflator. Following the inflation event, you may experience temporary respiratory discomfort or chest pressure, which
can stem from the combined force of the seat belt and the airbag, as well as the presence of the released powder. To
alleviate this and minimize exposure, ensure that you open the vehicle doors and windows as soon as it is safe to do
so after the impact.
While the smoke and powder used in the Kia Carnival airbag system are generally non-toxic, they may cause mild
irritation to the skin, eyes, or respiratory tract. If you experience irritation, immediately wash the affected areas
with cold water. Should symptoms persist or worsen, please consult a medical professional promptly.
WARNING: Hot components
For your safety, avoid touching the internal components of the airbag storage areas immediately following deployment.
The inflator modules located within the Kia Carnival steering wheel, instrument panel, and the roof rails above the
doors become extremely hot during the inflation process. Direct contact with these components can result in severe
thermal burn injuries.
WARNING
To ensure the airbag system functions correctly in an emergency, never install, mount, or place any accessories—such
as phone holders, decorative items, or electronic devices—near the airbag deployment zones. These areas include the
instrument panel, windows, door pillars, and roof rails of your Kia Carnival. Obstructions in these zones can
interfere with proper deployment or cause secondary projectiles during an inflation event.
Never place a rear-facing child restraint on the front passenger's seat of the Kia Carnival. If the front passenger
airbag deploys, it will strike the rear-facing restraint with immense force, which can lead to catastrophic or fatal
injuries to the infant.
Furthermore, you should not install front-facing child restraints in the front passenger seat. In the event of a
collision, the inflation of the passenger-side airbag could cause severe physical trauma to a child. Always
prioritize installing child restraint systems in the rear seating positions of your Kia Carnival.
WARNING: Air bag deployment
When children are seated in the rear outboard seats of a Kia Carnival equipped with side and/or curtain airbags,
always install the Child Restraint System (CRS) as far away from the door panel as possible. The rapid inflation of
side-impact airbags is designed to protect adults, but the force of deployment could potentially impact a child
seated too close to the door-side trim.
