Kia Carnival: ENGINE START/STOP button / Starting the engine

Safety guidelines for starting the Kia Carnival engine WARNING

  • Never attempt to start your Kia Carnival while pressing the accelerator pedal. This can cause the vehicle to lurch forward unexpectedly.
  • Always allow the engine to stabilize at a normal idle RPM before shifting into D (Drive) or R (Reverse). Releasing the brake pedal while the engine is at high idle can cause the Kia Carnival to move abruptly, which may lead to loss of control or an accident.

Starting the engine with smart key

Upon opening the doors or pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button, your Kia Carnival automatically scans for the presence of the authorized smart key within the cabin.

If the smart key is not detected inside the vehicle, the "Smart key not detected warning icon on Kia Carnival instrument cluster" indicator will illuminate, accompanied by a "Key is not in the vehicle" alert on the instrument cluster and LCD display. If all doors are closed, an audible chime will sound for 5 seconds. Please note that this warning will cease once the vehicle begins moving; always ensure the smart key is securely in your possession before departing.

The engine will only start if the smart key is detected within the Kia Carnival cabin. To prevent unintended engine activation or accidental vehicle movement, never allow children or individuals unfamiliar with the vehicle's operation to interact with the ENGINE START/STOP button or related controls while the key is present.

  • If the smart key battery is depleted or the key is malfunctioning, you can start the engine by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button directly with the body of the smart key. Ensure the key contacts the button at a right angle for optimal signal transmission.

Positioning smart key against the ENGINE START/STOP button

  • If the stop lamp fuse is blown, normal starting procedures may be disabled. In this event, replace the fuse immediately. If replacement is not possible, you may attempt to start the engine by pressing and holding the ENGINE START/STOP button for 10 seconds while the ignition is in the ACC position. For your safety, always depress the brake pedal when starting your Kia Carnival whenever possible.

  • Avoid pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button for longer than 10 seconds unless the stop lamp fuse is confirmed to be blown.

Starting the engine

  1. Ensure the smart key is with you or located inside the Kia Carnival.
  2. Verify that the parking brake is firmly engaged.
  3. Shift the transmission into P (Park) and depress the brake pedal fully.
  4. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button.
  5. Begin driving at moderate speeds immediately; extensive stationary warm-up is unnecessary. Avoid rapid acceleration or heavy braking during the initial warm-up period to protect your Kia Carnival engine components.

To prevent potential mechanical damage, avoid turning off the engine immediately after it has been subjected to heavy loads (such as climbing steep hills or high-speed towing). Allow the Kia Carnival engine to idle for a short period to stabilize internal temperatures before shutdown.
