The Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system in your Kia Carnival is designed to provide advanced
enhancements to vehicle stability and steering precision. It works in tandem with the Electronic Stability Control
(ESC) and Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) to help you maintain control under challenging conditions, specifically:
- When driving on slippery, wet, or icy roads.
- When the system detects a significant difference in the coefficient of friction between the left and right
wheels, such as when one side of the vehicle hits a patch of ice while the other remains on dry pavement.
WARNING: Tire/wheel size
When replacing tires or wheels on your Kia Carnival, always ensure they match the original factory
specifications. Installing tires of varying sizes or types can disrupt the calibration of the VSM system,
significantly diminishing its safety benefits and potentially leading to unpredictable handling.
VSM operation
During active VSM intervention, you may notice a slight, rhythmic pulsation in the vehicle or feel unique feedback
through the steering wheel. This is the result of the system modulating brake pressure and fine-tuning the MDPS to
keep you on your intended path; these sensations are perfectly normal and indicate the system is working effectively
to stabilize your Kia Carnival.
Please note that the VSM system is automatically inhibited and does not operate under the following
conditions:
- Driving on steep inclines or sharp gradients.
- Driving in reverse.
- When the ESC OFF indicator light (
) remains illuminated on the instrument cluster.
- When the MDPS (steering) warning light remains illuminated, indicating a potential sensor or motor fault.
VSM operation off
If you press the ESC OFF button to disable the Electronic Stability Control, the VSM system will also be deactivated,
and the ESC OFF indicator light (
) will appear. To re-enable VSM, simply press the button again;
the light will extinguish, and the system will resume its monitoring duties.
WARNING: Vehicle Stability Management
While the VSM provides vital support, always drive with caution. It is a supplemental safety feature and cannot
overcome the fundamental laws of physics. It only assists in maintaining vehicle control under specific, limited
circumstances.
Malfunction indicator
If the ESC indicator (
) or the MDPS warning light remains illuminated—even if
you have not manually pressed the ESC OFF button—it indicates that the vehicle's onboard diagnostics have detected a
potential malfunction. In such a case, please have your Kia Carnival inspected by an authorized Kia
dealer as soon as possible.
It is important to remember that the VSM is not a substitute for safe, defensive driving practices. Your
responsibility as the driver includes:
- Maintaining appropriate speed and following distance at all times.
- Keeping a firm, two-handed grip on the steering wheel.
- Adapting your driving style to current weather conditions, including rain, snow, or irregular road surfaces.
WARNING
ALWAYS wear your seat belt. No safety system, regardless of how advanced, can compensate for all instances of driver
error or extreme driving conditions. Always drive your Kia Carnival responsibly.
