The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system in your Kia Carnival is a sophisticated safety
technology engineered to help stabilize the vehicle during challenging cornering maneuvers and sudden steering
inputs.
By independently applying brake pressure to specific wheels and adjusting engine output via the vehicle management
system, the ESC effectively counters understeer or oversteer, helping you maintain your intended path.
While the ESC significantly enhances safety, it cannot override the laws of physics. Excessive speed during turns,
abrupt steering maneuvers, or hydroplaning on wet surfaces can still lead to a loss of control and serious accidents.
The technology is not a replacement for driver skill; a safe and attentive driver remains the most critical factor in
preventing traction loss. Always adhere to standard safety precautions, such as adjusting your speed to match current
road conditions, to ensure your Kia Carnival remains stable.
WARNING
For maximum occupant protection, ALWAYS wear your seat belt. No safety system, regardless of how advanced, can fully
compensate for driver error or extreme environmental conditions. Please drive responsibly.
The ESC is designed to assist you under adverse conditions, but it is not a substitute for safe driving habits.
Factors such as your current speed, road surface quality, and steering input intensity dictate whether the system can
effectively prevent a loss of control. It remains your responsibility to corner at reasonable speeds and maintain a
sufficient margin of safety at all times. During active ESC intervention, you might notice a "tik-tik" sound or a
subtle pulsation in the brake pedal; this is normal and indicates that your Kia Carnival is actively
stabilizing itself.
NOTICE
A faint "click" sound within the cabin immediately after the vehicle begins to move post-startup is perfectly normal.
It confirms that the Kia Carnival ESC system is performing its automatic self-diagnostic check and
is functioning properly.
ESC operation
ESC ON condition
- When the ENGINE START/STOP button is turned ON, both the ESC and ESC OFF indicator lights will appear for
approximately 3 seconds as a bulb check, after which the ESC system automatically activates.
- To manually deactivate the system, press and hold the ESC OFF button for at least half a second after starting
the engine. The "ESC OFF" indicator will illuminate on your dashboard. To reactivate it, press the same button
again, and the indicator will extinguish.
- Upon startup, you may hear a light ticking noise; this is the ESC performing an automatic system self-test and
does not indicate a malfunction.
When operating
When the ESC system is actively working to stabilize the Kia Carnival, the ESC indicator light on
the dashboard will blink. During this operation, you may feel a slight pulsation throughout the vehicle; this is a
standard result of automated brake control and indicates the system is performing as expected.
Note: When attempting to drive out of deep mud or on extremely slippery road surfaces, you might observe that
pressing the accelerator pedal does not cause the engine RPM to increase significantly. This is the traction control
portion of the ESC system preventing wheel spin to help you regain grip.
ESC operation off
Your Kia Carnival is equipped with two distinct "ESC OFF" states, allowing you to tailor the level
of electronic intervention based on specific driving conditions.
If you turn the ESC off while driving and then stop the vehicle, the system remains in the disabled state. However,
upon restarting the engine, the Kia Carnival will automatically reset and turn the ESC system back
on to ensure maximum safety.
A: Traction and Stability Control disabled
ESC off state 1
To deactivate the traction control function while keeping the ESC brake control function active, press the ESC OFF
button (
) for
less than 3 seconds. The ESC OFF indicator light (
) will
illuminate on your cluster.
ESC off state 2
To fully disable both the traction control and the brake control functions of the ESC, press and hold the ESC OFF
button (
) for
more than 3 seconds. The indicator light (
) will
appear, and an audible warning chime will sound. In this state, the vehicle stability control function is completely
inactive.

When the ENGINE START/STOP button is turned to ON, these lights will illuminate briefly as a self-test. They should
turn off after a few seconds if your Kia Carnival system is operating normally. If the ESC indicator
light blinks, it means the system is currently intervening to stabilize the vehicle; if it stays on, a system fault
may be present.
WARNING
Electronic Stability Control is an active safety aid, not a substitute for safe, defensive driving practices. Always
remain alert and adapt your driving to road conditions.
ESC OFF usage
When driving
- For optimal safety, keep the ESC enabled during all daily driving scenarios.
- If you must deactivate the system, do so only while driving on a flat, stable road surface.
WARNING
Never press the ESC OFF button while the system is actively working (indicated by a blinking light), as this can
cause an immediate and unexpected loss of vehicle control.
NOTICE
- When performing maintenance on a dynamometer, ensure the ESC is turned OFF. Leaving it on may result in
inaccurate diagnostic readings or limit engine power.
- Turning the ESC off has no effect on your ABS or standard hydraulic braking system performance.
