Drive mode
The Kia Carnival allows you to customize your driving dynamics based on your personal preference or
specific road conditions via the Drive Mode Integrated Control System.
You can toggle between different modes by pressing the DRIVE MODE button on the center console.
- ECO mode: Optimized to improve fuel efficiency for environmentally conscious driving.
- NORMAL mode: Provides a balanced, smooth driving experience suitable for daily commuting in your
Kia Carnival.
- SPORT mode: Adjusts powertrain parameters to provide a more responsive, firm, and sporty ride.
Upon restarting the engine, the system defaults to NORMAL mode. The exception is ECO mode; if it was active when the
engine was turned off, the Kia Carnival will maintain ECO mode upon restart.
Changing drive modes also adjusts the responsiveness of the Smart Cruise Control (SCC), if equipped:
| Drive Mode |

ECO mode
When ECO mode is engaged, the engine and transmission logic are calibrated to prioritize fuel economy.
- When ECO mode is selected, the "ECO" indicator will appear on your cluster.
- The drive mode status is saved, ensuring your preference is maintained when the engine is restarted.
NOTICE
Please be aware that real-world fuel efficiency in your Kia Carnival will vary based on individual
driving habits and road conditions. When ECO mode is active, you may notice:
- Reduced acceleration response when pressing the pedal moderately.
- Limited air conditioning performance to reduce engine load.
- Modified transmission shift patterns.
- Slightly higher engine noise during certain phases of operation.
These characteristics are normal and are part of the system's logic to improve the overall fuel efficiency of your
Kia Carnival.
SPORT mode
The SPORT mode in your Kia Carnival is engineered to provide a more dynamic driving experience. It
manages driving dynamics by automatically adjusting the steering effort, engine response, and transmission shift
logic to enhance overall vehicle performance.
- When you select SPORT mode using the DRIVE MODE button, the dedicated SPORT indicator will illuminate on the
instrument cluster.
- For your convenience, the Kia Carnival drive mode system defaults to NORMAL mode whenever the
engine is restarted. If you prefer the responsive feel of SPORT mode, simply re-select it using the DRIVE MODE
button.
- When SPORT mode is active:
- The engine RPM will remain elevated for a longer duration after you release the accelerator pedal, ensuring
power is immediately available.
- Upshifts are deliberately delayed during acceleration to maximize torque delivery and performance.
NOTICE
Due to the performance-oriented calibration of SPORT mode, please be aware that your Kia Carnival
may experience a slight decrease in overall fuel efficiency.
SMART mode
The innovative SMART mode is designed to intelligently select the optimal driving style among ECO, NORMAL, and SPORT
modes. By analyzing your specific driving habits—such as the speed of your brake pedal depression or the intensity of
steering wheel input—the system adapts to your current needs.
- Toggle the DRIVE MODE button to engage SMART mode; the corresponding indicator will appear on your cluster to
confirm activation.
- As with other settings, the Kia Carnival will revert to NORMAL mode upon engine restart; if you
prefer SMART mode, please re-select it manually.
- SMART mode continuously monitors and controls gear shifting patterns and engine torque, seamlessly transitioning
between modes based on your driving style.
NOTICE
- When you are driving with a gentle, consistent style, SMART mode switches to ECO mode to improve fuel economy.
Keep in mind that actual efficiency will vary based on terrain (incline/decline) and acceleration patterns.
- When you drive aggressively—characterized by sharp turns or abrupt deceleration—SMART mode transitions to SPORT
mode, which may influence your Kia Carnival fuel economy.
Various driving situations you may encounter in SMART mode:
- The system shifts to ECO mode after a period of light accelerator pedal usage, categorizing your driving as
economical.
- If you increase your accelerator input—by depressing the pedal sharply or repetitively—the system will transition
to SMART COMFORT mode.
- On upward inclines, the Kia Carnival may automatically shift to COMFORT mode to maintain power,
returning to ECO mode once you reach a level road.
- In aggressive situations, such as sudden acceleration or rapid steering inputs, the system engages SMART SPORT.
In this state, the vehicle stays in a lower gear to support swift maneuvers and utilizes increased engine braking.
- In SMART SPORT mode, you may feel an increased engine braking effect even after releasing the accelerator; this
is normal as the vehicle holds a lower gear to prepare for your next acceleration.
- SMART SPORT is reserved for more demanding driving scenarios, while standard driving will typically see the
system cycle between SMART ECO and SMART COMFORT.
Limitation of SMART mode
SMART mode may be temporarily limited, with the "OFF" indicator appearing, under the following circumstances:
- Cruise Control Activation: If the Smart Cruise Control (SCC) system is actively controlling your
vehicle speed, it may override SMART mode. Note that simply activating the cruise system does not necessarily
deactivate SMART mode, but SCC-led speed control takes priority.
- Transmission Oil Temperature: If the transmission oil temperature is outside of its optimal
range (extremely high or low), the system will temporarily deactivate SMART mode to protect transmission
components, as the vehicle is no longer operating under normal conditions.
