Kia Carnival: Driver assistance guide / Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) (Sensor Fusion)

Kia Carnival (KA4) 2022-2026 Owner's Manual / Driver assistance guide / Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) (Sensor Fusion)

Basic function

Diagram of the FCA sensor fusion system detecting traffic hazards ahead of the Kia Carnival

The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system in your Kia Carnival utilizes advanced sensor fusion technology to monitor the road ahead. It is designed to detect vehicles, powered two-wheelers, pedestrians, and cyclists. If the system calculates that a collision risk is imminent, it provides visual warnings on the instrument cluster and audible alerts. To further protect you, the Kia Carnival may automatically apply emergency braking to reduce impact speed or attempt to avoid the collision entirely.

Even at higher speeds, the FCA can monitor vehicles in adjacent lanes. If you initiate a lane change while a potential hazard is detected, the Kia Carnival may trigger emergency braking to mitigate or prevent a side-swipe or rear-end collision (if equipped).

Junction Turning function

When you are preparing to turn left at a crossroad with your turn signal active, the Junction Turning function monitors the oncoming lane. If it detects an oncoming vehicle, motorcycle, or cyclist that poses a collision risk, the system can assist by applying emergency braking to ensure a safer turn.

Junction Crossing function (if equipped)

The Junction Crossing function provides an additional layer of security when driving through an intersection. It can detect vehicles approaching from the left or right and, if a collision risk is identified, the system will apply emergency braking to help mitigate or avoid the impact.

Direct Oncoming Vehicle function

This function enhances safety by detecting vehicles or powered two-wheelers approaching from the opposite direction. If the Kia Carnival detects a collision risk with an oncoming object, it can reduce the vehicle's speed to minimize the severity of a potential frontal collision.

Lane-Change Oncoming function (if equipped)

When changing lanes, this feature helps mitigate or prevent collisions with oncoming traffic. If the system detects an oncoming vehicle or motorcycle that you may have missed, it assists the driver's steering to help you safely maintain your path.

Lane-Change Side function (if equipped)

The Lane-Change Side function monitors the adjacent lane during a lane change maneuver. By assisting the driver's steering, it helps prevent collisions with vehicles or powered two-wheelers that might be in your blind spot or approaching rapidly from the side.

Evasive Steering Assist function (if equipped)

  • Driver steering assist: If the Kia Carnival detects a potential collision with a vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist ahead and you initiate a steering maneuver to avoid it, this system provides steering torque assistance to ensure the evasive maneuver is more effective.

  • Evasive steering assist: This function is designed for scenarios where braking alone may not be sufficient. If a collision risk is detected in your lane, the Kia Carnival warns you and provides steering assistance if you move the steering wheel to swerve away. This function requires sufficient operating space between your Kia Carnival and the detected pedestrian or cyclist to be effective.

Detecting sensor

The Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) system relies on a sophisticated array of sensors strategically placed around your Kia Carnival to monitor the environment. The precision of these sensors is vital for the system's overall reliability.

Caution icon: Guidelines for maintaining Kia Carnival radar and camera sensors CAUTION

  • Integrity: Never attempt to disassemble, modify, or strike the detecting sensors. Any physical interference can permanently compromise their calibration.

  • Professional Service: If any sensor is replaced or repaired, the vehicle must be inspected and recalibrated by an authorized Kia dealer to ensure system accuracy.

  • Impact awareness: If your Kia Carnival experiences an impact near a sensor area, the FCA may not operate as intended, even if no warning light is illuminated. Always have the vehicle inspected after a collision.

  • Windshield care: Do not install stickers, accessories, or apply aftermarket tinting to the windshield near the front camera, as this will obstruct the vision of the Driver Assistance systems.

  • Moisture control: Always ensure the front view camera area remains dry and free of condensation.

  • Reflective objects: Never place reflective items (like white paper or mirrors) on the instrument panel, as reflections can blind the sensors.

  • Obstruction prevention: Do not place objects on the dashboard or near the windshield, as they can interfere with the defogging system, leading to poor visibility and sensor errors.

  • Front radar protection: Do not apply bumper stickers, films, or guards near the front radar cover. Any non-factory addition can severely attenuate radar signals.

  • Cleaning protocol: Keep the front radar and its cover clean and free of debris. Use only a soft cloth; never use high-pressure water spray, as this can penetrate seals and damage the electronics.

  • Genuine parts: Only use Kia Genuine Parts for sensor covers. Painting or modifying these covers will cause the FCA to malfunction. Use only authorized components to maintain the safety standards of your Kia Carnival.

  • Body repairs: If the bumper is replaced or painted, the sensors may require recalibration. Always perform this work at an authorized service center.

  • External attachments: Installing a trailer or carrier may obstruct the sensors or alter the vehicle’s profile, which can negatively affect the performance of the Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist.
