Kia Carnival: Forward/Reverse Parking Distance Warning (PDW) (if equipped) / Forward/Reverse Parking Distance Warning malfunction and precautions

Forward/Reverse Parking Distance Warning malfunction

Dashboard warning alert for Kia Carnival Parking Distance Warning system fault

[A]: Check Driver Assistance system

If the Forward/Reverse Parking Distance Warning (PDW) system or any of its associated components experience a technical issue, a diagnostic warning message will appear on your Kia Carnival instrument cluster to alert you.

Detailed information regarding the nature of the fault can be viewed within the service message section of the utility information menu on your instrument cluster display. If the system fails to resume normal operation after you have checked the status, please visit an authorized Kia dealer to have your Kia Carnival professionally inspected and serviced.

Parking Distance Warning disabled

Kia Carnival instrument cluster display showing limited sensor performance

[A]: Driver Assistance system limited. Ultrasonic sensor blocked.

The ultrasonic sensors are strategically positioned to detect objects surrounding your Kia Carnival. However, the performance of the Parking Distance Warning may be temporarily limited or completely unavailable if the sensors are obstructed by environmental factors such as heavy snow, freezing rain, mud, or other foreign substances.

To identify which specific sensor is reporting a blind warning or obstruction, you can check the service message area in the instrument cluster's utility information view. The system should return to normal functionality once you have carefully cleaned the sensors. We recommend regularly inspecting the sensors to ensure they remain free of debris to maintain optimal safety.

If the Kia Carnival Parking Distance Warning continues to show a fault even after thorough cleaning, the system may require professional diagnostics; in this case, have your vehicle inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

Notification icons for Kia Carnival sensor blockage NOTICE

  • The Master warning light (Master warning light icon displayed on Kia Carnival dashboard) will illuminate to indicate the general direction of a malfunction or a specific blocked sensor while the Parking Distance Warning system is active.

Limitations of Forward/Reverse Parking Distance Warning

While the Parking Distance Warning (PDW) system in your Kia Carnival is a highly capable safety feature, please be advised that it may not operate with full accuracy or reliability under the following environmental and operational circumstances:

  • A layer of ice has accumulated on the sensor surface.

  • The sensor is obscured by foreign materials, such as heavy snow, mud, or standing water (the Kia Carnival PDW system will typically return to normal function once these obstructions are safely cleared).

  • The vehicle is being operated in extreme temperature conditions (either intense heat or extreme cold), which can affect sensor sensitivity.

  • The sensor or its internal assembly has been improperly disassembled or tampered with.

  • The sensor face has been subjected to high-pressure impact or struck by a hard object, potentially causing internal misalignment.

  • The sensor surface has been scratched or scored by a sharp object.

  • The sensors or the immediate bumper area have been directly sprayed with a high-pressure car wash nozzle, which can force moisture into the housing.

  • You are in close proximity to external sources that emit high-frequency ultrasonic waves, such as loud vehicle horns, running motorcycle engines, or the air-release systems of large commercial vehicle brakes.

Furthermore, the Parking Distance Warning performance may be degraded or behave abnormally when:

  • There is heavy rainfall or significant water spray creating a dense mist around your Kia Carnival.

  • Water is actively flowing or streaming across the surface of the sensors.

  • The system experiences signal interference from the sensors of other vehicles in close proximity.

  • The sensors are coated with a buildup of ice or packed snow.

  • Driving over highly uneven terrain, loose gravel roads, or through dense, tall brush that may trigger false detections.

  • External equipment that generates ultrasonic interference is located near your Kia Carnival sensors.

  • The license plate has been relocated from its factory-designed position.

  • The Kia Carnival bumper height has been modified, or the sensor mounting angle has been altered from its original factory specifications.

  • Non-genuine equipment or aftermarket accessories are installed in the immediate vicinity of the ultrasonic sensors.

Please note that due to the physical limitations of ultrasonic technology, the following types of objects may not be reliably detected by the system:

  • Objects that are exceptionally sharp, slim, or thin, such as thin ropes, metal chains, small poles, or wires, which do not reflect sound waves back to the sensors effectively.

  • Narrow or sharp-edged objects, such as the corners of square columns or pillars, which may deflect ultrasonic pulses away from the sensors.

  • Objects composed of materials that tend to absorb or dampen ultrasonic sound waves, such as heavy fabrics, porous foam, or loose, fluffy snow, making them difficult for your Kia Carnival to identify.

  • Any objects that are significantly small, specifically those less than 40 inches (100 cm) in height and narrower than 6 inches (14 cm) in diameter.

  • Pedestrians, animals, or smaller objects that are positioned in a "blind zone" directly against the ultrasonic sensors where the pulse cannot be accurately reflected.

  • Critical safety warning label for Kia Carnival Parking Distance Warning system WARNING

    • The Parking Distance Warning system provided in your Kia Carnival is intended strictly as a supplemental driving aid. Because the system's operation can be significantly influenced by various external environmental and physical factors, it is your personal responsibility as the driver to perform thorough visual checks of the area surrounding the front and rear of the vehicle both before and during the entire parking process.

    • Please be aware that your new vehicle limited warranty does not provide coverage for any accidents, injuries, or property damage resulting from a malfunction or the inherent limitations of the Parking Distance Warning system.

    • Exercise extreme caution when maneuvering near pedestrians, cyclists, and especially young children. Many objects may go undetected by the Kia Carnival ultrasonic sensors due to the nature of the object's distance, size, or radar-absorbent material—all of which can severely limit the detection effectiveness of the sensors.

    • The Parking Distance Warning system does not always issue alerts in the chronological order of detection. The timing and sequence of alerts may vary dynamically based on your current vehicle speed, the angle of approach, or the unique physical shape of the person, animal, or object being detected.

    • If you suspect the Parking Distance Warning system in your Kia Carnival is not operating to its expected standards, we strongly advise having the system professionally inspected by an authorized Kia dealer as soon as possible.
