The Kia Carnival is engineered with a hands-free Smart Liftgate system, allowing you to access your
cargo area without physical contact. The liftgate will activate automatically via proximity detection only when all
the following conditions are simultaneously met:
-
At least 15 seconds have elapsed since all vehicle doors were completely closed and locked.
-
You are standing within the specified detection area for a continuous period of at least 3 seconds while
carrying your authorized smart key.
NOTICE
For safety and security, the Smart Liftgate with Auto Open function will be inhibited in the following scenarios:
-
The smart key remains continuously detected within the proximity range during the initial 15-second "arming"
phase after the doors are locked.
-
The smart key is detected near the front door handles within 15 seconds of closing the doors (relevant for
Kia Carnival models equipped with the "Welcome Light" feature).
-
Any vehicle door is left in an unlocked or partially open state.
-
The smart key is detected inside the cabin of the Kia Carnival.
-
Configuration Settings: To enable or customize this convenience feature, navigate to Setup
→ Vehicle → Door → Smart Liftgate within your Kia Carnival infotainment
system.
-
Detection and Alert Sequence:
When you are positioned in the detection zone—approximately 20 to 40 inches (50 to 100 cm) behind the rear
bumper—while carrying your smart key, the Kia Carnival will recognize your presence. The
hazard warning lights will flash and a chime will sound to alert you that the smart key has been detected.
Following this sequence, the liftgate will automatically begin to open.
NOTICE
If you do not intend to open the liftgate, avoid lingering in the detection zone. If you enter the area
unintentionally and the hazard lights and alert chimes begin to trigger, simply move away from the rear of the
vehicle while carrying your smart key; the liftgate will remain securely closed.
NOTICE
Please be aware that infotainment system layouts may change after periodic software updates. For detailed
information or troubleshooting, refer to the user's manual provided within your Kia Carnival
infotainment system or consult the quick reference guide supplied with your vehicle documentation.
Please note that infotainment system interfaces and menu structures may evolve following periodic software updates.
For the most current, model-specific instructions or to resolve any feature-related questions, always refer to the
integrated digital owner's manual within your Kia Carnival infotainment system or consult the
printed quick reference guide provided with your vehicle.
Automatic opening
Once the Smart Liftgate system validates your proximity, the vehicle’s hazard warning lights will flash and a
rhythmic chime will sound 6 times. Following these alerts, the liftgate will automatically begin its opening
process.
WARNING
-
Always ensure the liftgate is completely latched and closed before operating your Kia
Carnival.
-
Perform a thorough visual sweep of the surrounding area to confirm that no people, pets, or objects are
obstructing the path of the liftgate before opening or closing.
-
Exercise caution when parking on an incline; unsecured cargo may shift and fall out when the liftgate opens,
potentially causing serious injury.
-
Be sure to deactivate the "Smart Liftgate with Auto Open" feature before taking your Kia
Carnival through an automatic car wash. If left active, the high-pressure water and brush
movements may be misinterpreted by the sensors, causing the liftgate to open unexpectedly.
-
Keep your smart key secure and out of the reach of children. They may inadvertently trigger the Smart
Liftgate with Auto Open while playing near the rear of the vehicle, which poses a safety risk.
CAUTION
Liftgate structural integrity: Always confirm that the liftgate is fully closed and securely
locked before driving. Operating the Kia Carnival with the liftgate even slightly ajar can cause
long-term mechanical damage to the gas lifters and mounting hardware, potentially leading to costly repairs and
system failure.
