The Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist system in the Kia Carnival utilizes a tiered response strategy
based on the identified level of collision risk:
-
Collision warning: Providing early alerts when an approaching vehicle is detected.
-
Emergency braking: Automatically applying the brakes if a collision is deemed imminent.
-
Stopping vehicle and ending brake control: Safely bringing the Kia Carnival to a complete halt
and subsequently releasing brake control once the immediate threat has passed.
Collision warning

[A]: Collision Warning
If the Collision Warning system detects an imminent hazard, your Kia Carnival will immediately notify you through a
combination of alerts: an illuminated warning light on the outside rearview mirror, a clear warning message on your
instrument cluster, an audible chime, and a haptic steering wheel vibration.
These Collision Warning alerts are simultaneously mirrored on the central infotainment system screen to ensure
maximum driver awareness.
The Collision Warning system activates once all the following operational criteria are met:
-
The transmission gear is shifted into R (Reverse).
-
Your Kia Carnival is traveling at a speed of less than 5 mph (8 km/h).
-
An approaching vehicle is detected within a range of approximately 82 ft (25 m) from either the left or right
side of your vehicle.
-
The detected vehicle approaching from the left or right is traveling at a speed greater than 3 mph (5 km/h).
NOTICE
-
If the necessary detection conditions are met, the system will trigger a warning even if your Kia Carnival is
at a complete stop (0 mph / 0 km/h) while in reverse gear.
-
Please note that the visual icons and color schemes on your instrument cluster may vary based on the selected
theme or the specific digital cluster configuration of your Kia Carnival.
Emergency braking

[A]: Emergency Braking
Should the system identify a high-risk hazard, it will provide the same multi-sensory alerts (mirror light, message,
sound, and steering vibration) as the Collision Warning. In addition to these alerts, the Kia Carnival will
automatically trigger Emergency Braking to help avoid a potential impact with vehicles approaching from the rear-left
or rear-right sides.
This automated Emergency Braking feature operates strictly when the following conditions are satisfied:
-
The gear is shifted to R (Reverse) and your driving speed is below 5 mph (8 km/h).
-
The approaching vehicle is identified within a critical distance of approximately 5 ft (1.5 m) from the sides
of your Kia Carnival.
-
The velocity of the vehicle approaching from either side is at least 3 mph (5 km/h).
WARNING
Automated brake control will disengage when any of the following scenarios occur regarding the approaching vehicle:
-
The approaching vehicle has cleared the sensor detection range.
-
The approaching vehicle has successfully passed behind your Kia Carnival.
-
The trajectory of the approaching vehicle changes and is no longer directed toward your vehicle.
-
The speed of the approaching vehicle significantly decreases.
-
You, as the driver, apply sufficient pressure to the brake pedal to take manual control.
Stopping vehicle and ending brake control

[A]: Drive carefully
In the event that your Kia Carnival comes to a halt due to the emergency braking intervention, a specific warning
message will be displayed on the instrument cluster to alert the driver. It is critical that you depress the brake
pedal immediately upon vehicle stoppage and perform a thorough visual check of your surroundings to ensure it is safe
to proceed.
-
The automatic brake control will cease approximately 2 seconds after the Kia Carnival has been brought to a
complete stop by the emergency braking function.
-
If you as the driver apply significant pressure to the brake pedal during an emergency braking event, the
intervention provided by the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist will automatically be canceled,
returning full control to you.
WARNING
-
For your safety and the safety of others, please ensure you only modify system settings after you have parked
your Kia Carnival in a secure and legal location.
-
If another driver assistance function is simultaneously issuing an alert, the Rear Cross-Traffic
Collision-Avoidance Assist warning message or audible chime may be suppressed or prioritized differently by the
infotainment system.
-
In environments with high levels of ambient noise, such as construction zones or busy traffic, you may not
clearly hear the audible warning signals emitted by the Kia Carnival.
-
The Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist may not trigger an automated intervention if the system
detects that you have already initiated manual braking to avoid a potential collision.
-
During a sudden emergency braking event, your Kia Carnival may decelerate rapidly, which could lead to
passenger discomfort or the shifting of unsecured items. Always ensure all passengers are wearing seat belts
and that loose objects are properly stored.
-
Please note that even in the unlikely event of a technical malfunction within the Rear Cross-Traffic
Collision-Avoidance Assist system, your Kia Carnival maintains its standard, highly reliable mechanical braking
performance.
WARNING
-
If the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist is actively applying the brakes, this automated braking
control will automatically cancel if the system detects that you have intentionally and firmly depressed the
accelerator pedal to maneuver the Kia Carnival out of a specific situation.
-
Please be aware that the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist is a supplemental safety feature. It
does not operate optimally in all environmental or traffic situations and cannot guarantee the avoidance of all
potential collisions while reversing your Kia Carnival.
-
Depending on complex variables such as severe weather, poor road conditions, or congested driving environments,
the system may occasionally fail to provide an audible or visual warning.
-
The ultimate responsibility for the safe operation of the vehicle remains entirely with the driver. Never rely
solely on the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist. Always maintain a safe braking distance, utilize
your mirrors, and be prepared to manually depress the brake pedal to reduce your speed or bring your Kia
Carnival to a complete and sudden stop if necessary.
-
Under no circumstances should you deliberately attempt to test or trigger the Rear Cross-Traffic
Collision-Avoidance Assist by backing the Kia Carnival toward people, animals, vehicles, or other obstacles.
Such actions are extremely dangerous and may result in severe property damage, serious injury, or even death.
WARNING
The automated brake control function of the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist relies heavily on the
vehicle's Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Therefore, the automatic braking feature may not operate properly or
engage at all depending on the current operational status of the Kia Carnival's ESC system.
In scenarios where automatic braking is temporarily unavailable, the system will only issue visual and audible
warnings when:
-
The ESC (Electronic Stability Control) warning indicator light is illuminated on your dashboard cluster, which
may indicate a fault or that the system has been manually disabled.
-
The ESC (Electronic Stability Control) is already actively engaged in managing a different vehicle dynamic
function to keep the Kia Carnival stable.
NOTICE
-
If a potential collision is successfully mitigated and braking is assisted by the Rear Cross-Traffic
Collision-Avoidance Assist, you must take back manual control immediately by firmly depressing the brake pedal
and comprehensively checking your surroundings before proceeding.
-
Please note that each time you shift the transmission gear of your Kia Carnival into R (Reverse), the automated
braking control feature is designed to operate only once for a vehicle approaching from the left side, and once
for a vehicle approaching from the right side.
