The liftgate of your Kia Carnival is designed for convenient cargo access, but it requires careful
operation to ensure the safety of all occupants and the integrity of the vehicle's components.
WARNING
Exhaust fumes: Driving your Kia Carnival with the liftgate open is dangerous. It
can draw toxic exhaust fumes into the cabin, which may cause serious injury or death to passengers. If an emergency
requires you to drive with the liftgate ajar, you must open all windows and set the climate control system to provide
maximum fresh air intake to dilute the cabin environment.
WARNING
Rear cargo area: The rear cargo area is not a passenger zone. Occupants must always be seated in
approved positions with proper seatbelts fastened. Riding in the cargo area exposes individuals to extreme risk of
injury during accidents or sudden maneuvers.
Opening the liftgate
-
The Kia Carnival liftgate locks and unlocks in synchronization with the rest of the vehicle
doors when using the smart key or the central interior lock switch.
-
To unlock only the liftgate, press and hold the dedicated liftgate unlock button on your smart key for
approximately 1 second.
-
Once the system is unlocked, press the handle release and lift the gate upward to open.
-
When the liftgate is closed after being opened, it will automatically lock provided that all other vehicle
doors are locked.
NOTICE
In extremely cold or wet weather, moisture may freeze within the latch mechanisms. If the liftgate does not operate
smoothly, do not force it; allow the vehicle to warm up to clear any ice accumulation.
WARNING
The liftgate swings upward and outward. Always check your surroundings for low ceilings, objects, or people before
initiating the opening sequence to prevent collision or injury.
CAUTION
Always ensure the liftgate is fully closed before moving your Kia Carnival. Driving with the gate
unsecured can place excessive stress on the gas lifters and mounting hardware, potentially causing long-term
structural damage.
Closing the liftgate
WARNING
Ensure that all hands, fingers, and other body parts are completely clear of the closing path of the liftgate to
prevent pinching injuries.
WARNING
Exhaust fumes: The liftgate must remain fully closed whenever the Kia Carnival
engine is running. Leaving it ajar allows dangerous gases to enter the passenger compartment, posing a serious health
risk.
CAUTION
Before closing the gate, ensure that no cargo, luggage, or accessories are obstructing the latch or striker. Forcing
the liftgate closed against an obstruction can severely damage the locking mechanism.
Emergency liftgate safety release
In the unlikely event that you are locked inside the cargo area, your Kia Carnival is equipped with
an emergency liftgate safety release lever located at the bottom of the interior liftgate trim. This feature provides
a vital escape route in emergency situations.
To manually unlock and open the liftgate from inside the luggage compartment of your Kia Carnival,
follow this procedure:
-
Locate the small access opening at the bottom center of the interior liftgate trim.
-
Insert a long, thin, flat object (such as a screwdriver or the vehicle's emergency key blade) into the opening.
-
Gently slide the internal latch lever in the direction indicated by the arrow to release the lock.
-
Push the liftgate outward firmly to open it.
WARNING
-
All owners and passengers of the Kia Carnival should familiarize themselves with the location
and operation of this emergency release lever to ensure prompt exit if ever accidentally locked inside.
-
NEVER permit anyone to occupy the liftgate area. If the liftgate latches while a person is
inside, they may face life-threatening risks including suffocation, carbon monoxide poisoning from exhaust
fumes, heatstroke, or hypothermia. Additionally, the rear cargo area is part of the vehicle’s crush zone and
offers no protection in the event of a collision.
-
Always keep your Kia Carnival locked and store the Smart Key securely out of the reach of
children. Educate your children explicitly about the severe dangers of playing in or around the liftgate area.
WARNING
-
The cargo area is not a designated seating zone. It is inherently dangerous for passengers to occupy this space
during vehicle operation due to the lack of safety restraints and proximity to the vehicle exterior.
-
The emergency release lever should be reserved strictly for genuine emergencies. Exercise extreme caution,
especially if the vehicle is currently in motion.
CAUTION
Always perform a visual check of the surrounding area before opening or closing the liftgate. Ensure that no people
or objects are in the path of the gate to prevent accidents. Wait until the liftgate has reached its fully opened and
stationary position before attempting to load or unload items.
WARNING
Do not hold onto the gas lifters (the support struts) while the liftgate is moving. Gripping these components can
lead to finger entrapment or other serious injuries.
