Power liftgate operating conditions
The Power Liftgate system in your Kia Carnival is designed for maximum convenience. When the engine
is running, the liftgate will operate exclusively when the gear selector is in the P (Park) position. If the engine
is switched off, the system allows for liftgate operation regardless of the gear position. For your safety, the
system limits activation to speeds below 1.8 mph (3 km/h). Always ensure the Kia Carnival is safely
in P (Park) before initiating any liftgate operation.
WARNING
-
Never leave children or pets unattended inside the Kia Carnival. Children may inadvertently
activate the power liftgate, which could lead to accidental injury or damage to the vehicle's electrical and
mechanical components.
-
Always verify that the path of the liftgate is clear of all passengers, pedestrians, and physical objects (such
as garage walls, low ceilings, or adjacent vehicles) before activation to avoid collisions and costly body
damage.
A: 27 inches (70 cm) – Please maintain this clearance distance from the rear of the liftgate
during operation.
-
Avoid opening the liftgate if it is heavily covered with snow or burdened with added weight (e.g., aftermarket
bike racks or cargo carriers). The extra resistance can prevent the liftgate from opening fully or cause it to
close unexpectedly, posing a serious risk to anyone nearby.
-
Always clear away snow, ice, or excessive debris from the liftgate assembly before attempting to open the power
liftgate of your Kia Carnival.
NOTICE
-
Avoid manual operation of the power liftgate, as forced movement can damage the internal motor and actuator
mechanisms. If manual intervention is required due to a flat battery, use minimal force.
-
To preserve your Kia Carnival battery life, do not operate the power liftgate more than 10
times consecutively while the engine is off. Repeated usage should be performed with the engine running to
ensure a stable power supply.
-
Do not leave the power liftgate open for an extended period, as the interior lights and system standby can
drain the battery significantly.
-
Never apply excessive external force while the power liftgate is in motion; this can trigger system errors or
cause physical damage to the liftgate hinges and motor.
For your safety and the longevity of the liftgate mechanism, avoid grabbing or applying pressure to the liftgate
support struts at any time. Any deformation or accidental bending of these struts can cause significant damage to the
Kia Carnival body and may lead to severe personal injury if the gate fails to remain open securely.
-
Do not attempt to modify, disassemble, or repair any components of the power liftgate system yourself. All
maintenance and troubleshooting must be performed by a certified technician at an authorized Kia
Carnival dealer to ensure system integrity.
-
The power liftgate may not function as intended under the following conditions:
-
The vehicle is raised on one side (e.g., while changing a tire or performing under-vehicle inspections).
-
The vehicle is parked on a significant slope, uneven terrain, or unpaved road surfaces that cause body
misalignment.
-
Always ensure the liftgate is completely closed and all doors are securely locked using the central interior
button before entering an automatic car wash to prevent mechanical interference.
-
When washing your Kia Carnival, avoid spraying high-pressure water directly onto the external
power liftgate open/close button. Intense water pressure can trigger the sensor, causing the liftgate to open
unexpectedly during the wash process.
NOTICE
-
If the liftgate is not fully latched and the Kia Carnival reaches a speed of 1.8 mph (3 km/h)
or higher, a warning chime will sound 10 times. Please pull over to a safe location immediately, ensure the
liftgate is closed securely, and verify that the "liftgate open" warning light has cleared from your instrument
cluster.
-
In cold or freezing conditions, ice may interfere with the external button. If it becomes unresponsive, gently
clear the ice or utilize the remote operation buttons on your smart key or the overhead console to operate the
liftgate.
-
To prevent motor overheating, avoid operating the power liftgate more than 5 times in continuous succession. If
the system enters "cool-down" mode—signaled by a 3-time chime when a button is pressed—the liftgate will remain
locked. Wait approximately 1 minute to allow the motor assembly to cool before attempting normal operation
again.
Resetting the power liftgate
Occasionally, the power liftgate system of your Kia Carnival may require a system reset to restore
its factory-calibrated movement. A reset is typically necessary following these events:
-
The 12-volt vehicle battery has been recharged.
-
The 12-volt battery was removed, replaced, or disconnected.
-
The fuse associated with the power liftgate system was removed or replaced.
-
With the Kia Carnival engine off or running, ensure the transmission is in P (Park).
-
Simultaneously press and hold the interior power liftgate button (1) and the exterior button (2) until you hear
a confirmation chime.
-
Slowly and steadily close the liftgate manually.
-
Press the exterior open/close button. The liftgate will open automatically with a chime. You must wait for the
liftgate to reach its fully open position to complete the calibration. If the motion is interrupted before it
is fully open, the reset process will fail, and you must start again.
NOTICE
If your Kia Carnival liftgate continues to operate erratically or fails to function after performing
the reset procedure, please contact an authorized Kia Carnival dealer for a professional system
inspection.
Emergency liftgate safety release
In the event of an electrical failure or if you become trapped in the luggage compartment, you can open the liftgate
manually:
-
Insert a long, flat tool into the designated opening at the bottom of the interior liftgate trim.
-
Slide the internal latch in the direction of the arrow to release the lock.
-
Push the liftgate outward to open it.
WARNING
-
All Kia Carnival occupants should be aware of the emergency release location and procedure.
-
The cargo compartment is not a passenger space; occupants and animals should never ride there, as it lacks
safety restraints and ventilation, posing severe risks in the event of a collision.
-
The emergency lever is intended strictly for critical situations. Use with extreme caution while the vehicle is
in motion.
