The Rear Occupant Alert (ROA) system is a proactive safety feature integrated into the Kia Carnival, designed to
minimize the risk of accidentally leaving passengers or pets behind when exiting the vehicle.
Operation
You can easily manage the ROA settings through your Kia Carnival infotainment system. To configure the system,
navigate the menu as follows:
-
Press the SETUP button on your infotainment system.
-
Navigate through: Setup → Vehicle → Convenience → Rear Occupant Alert to enable or disable the
feature.
1st alert
If the rear doors of your Kia Carnival were opened and closed during the trip, the system will trigger a warning
message on the instrument cluster screen the next time you open the driver's door after turning off the engine.
A: Check rear seat for passengers and belongings
WARNING
The ROA system does not employ weight or infrared sensors to detect people or objects. Instead, it operates based on
the history of the rear door usage. It serves as a reminder to the driver to inspect the rear cabin area of the Kia
Carnival before walking away.
NOTICE
The ROA system logic relies on rear door usage history. This history resets only after the driver turns off the
ignition, exits the Kia Carnival, and locks the vehicle remotely. If the driver does not lock the doors and restarts
the engine, the alert may trigger again, reminding you to verify the rear seating area.
WARNING
As the power door lock system may not function during a total electrical failure, it is crucial to train all family
members—especially children—on how to manually operate the interior door handles of your Kia Carnival. Teaching them
these emergency manual procedures ensures they can exit safely in any situation where the electronic systems are
unavailable.
2nd alert (if equipped)
-
Following the 1st alert, the advanced 2nd alert system in your Kia Carnival activates if any movement is
detected in the rear seat area after the driver's door is closed and all vehicle doors are locked. In such a
case, the vehicle horn will sound for approximately 25 seconds. If the system continues to detect movement,
this alert cycle can repeat up to 8 times. Furthermore, if your Kia Carnival is equipped with Kia Connect
services, a text message notification will be sent to your registered device.
-
To silence the alarm and deactivate the 2nd alert, simply unlock the doors using your authorized smart key.
-
For your peace of mind, the system remains active and continues to monitor for movement within the Kia Carnival
cabin for up to 24 hours after the doors have been locked.
Please note that the 2nd alert is designed as a secondary safety layer and is only activated after the successful
prior notification of the 1st alert.
NOTICE
-
Ensure that all vehicle windows are fully closed before leaving your Kia Carnival. If a window is left open,
the interior sensors may detect unintended movement caused by external factors such as gusting wind, rain, or
insects, leading to a false alarm.
A: Check rear seat for passengers and belongings
-
If you prefer to temporarily disable the 2nd alert for a specific trip, you can press the "OK" button on the
steering wheel when the 1st alert message appears on the instrument cluster. This action will deactivate the
2nd alert for that single instance only.
-
Please be aware that if heavy boxes or large objects are stacked in the rear cabin of your Kia Carnival, the
motion sensors may be obstructed and fail to detect an occupant. Conversely, if a stacked object shifts or
falls, the system may trigger a false warning.
-
The ultrasonic sensors must remain clean; if they are covered by foreign substances, debris, or stickers, the
system may not operate according to factory standards.
-
The ROA alert may also be activated if the system detects movement in the driver or front passenger seats, so
please ensure those areas are clear when utilizing this feature.
-
For additional safety, always conduct a final manual visual inspection of the rear cabin of your Kia Carnival
before exiting the vehicle to ensure no children or pets are left behind.
-
Please be aware that the alarm might trigger while the doors of your Kia Carnival are locked due to external
vibrations or loud noises, such as those experienced in an automatic car wash or during high-traffic exposure.
-
For your convenience, interior motion detection is automatically suspended while the Kia Carnival is in the
remote start status.
WARNING
-
Even though your Kia Carnival is equipped with the sophisticated Rear Occupant Alert (ROA) system, it should
never replace your personal vigilance. Always conduct a thorough visual check of the entire rear seating area
before you exit the vehicle.
The ROA alert may not function or may be restricted if:
-
The movement detected is too subtle or does not persist for a sufficient duration to trigger the sensors.
-
A child is seated directly on the Kia Carnival seat without the elevation provided by a child safety
seat.
-
The rear passenger is obstructed, for example, by being covered with a thick blanket or other heavy
materials.
-
Environmental factors or unique cabin conditions interfere with sensor performance; always prioritize
passenger safety above reliance on automated detection functions.
WARNING
Should the electrical system of your Kia Carnival be compromised, the power door lock system may fail to operate as
expected. Consequently, we strongly advise training your child passengers on how to locate and operate the interior
door handles and manual locks before an emergency arises. Ensuring they are familiar with these manual procedures can
be life-saving in critical situations.
NOTICE
Please be advised that the interface and functionality of your Kia Carnival infotainment system may evolve following
official software updates. For the most accurate, step-by-step guidance on your vehicle’s specific configuration,
always refer to the integrated digital user's manual within your infotainment system and the provided quick reference
guide.
